I'm at a loss as to what to try next.Do I need to format the new hard drive first (if yes, how? it didn't come with instructions ), download new chipset or drivers? It really shouldn't be this difficult, should it? I've tried a couple of the "fixes" others have posted like 'right clicking' on the drive in the lower window of Disk Management to see if I could "assign/change the drive letter" but there is no option to do that, I've gone to Start -> Computer -> Organize -> Folder and search options -> click View tab -> uncheck "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" but still no change.
The lower window shows Disk 0 (the existing C: drive and it's partitions), Disk 1 (the new external drive but with no drive letter assigned and shown as 232.88 GB Unallocated) and CD-ROM 0. When I go to "Disk Management" only my C: drive and it's partitions are shown in the upper window.

The CD/DVD drive shows up in the MR wizard but the external drive does not.įor the last day and a half I've been reading countless posts in various Dell Support Forums, MS Answers Windows 7 forum as well as several others - that external USB mass storage devices aren't recognized appears to be a common problem that's been with Windows 7 since it's release and to this date has no single simple fix - this is incredible!Īll my other USB devices work including my 8G PNY memory stick. I've plugged the external drive in all the other USB slots but it still will not show up in "My Computer", the external drive does show up when I go to Devices and Printers and also in device manager (with no errors or problems shown). I thought I would just connect the external enclosure/HD to my XPS M1710, start the Macrium Reflect Wizard, choose the CD/DVD drive as the source of the image and the external drive as the target. Unfortunately when I put my new Seagate 250GB hard drive in my laptop and booted it with the rescue disk the Macrium Reflect Wizard only showed the new "C drive" and "Network" as my options for the source (location) of the image to be restored - it wouldn't recognize the CD/DVD drive! I made a second rescue disk using "compatibility mode" as Reflect suggests if drives are not shown in the wizard but this didn't help so I turned to your second suggestion and purchased an inexpensive USB hard drive enclosure ($9.99 by Sabrent).

You're not kidding about the most problematic method for creating a system image!īefore I spent $39-49 for the Acronis software I thought I'd try a free application (Macrium Reflect) and was able to create the image on several DVDs and create a rescue disk. The blank disks are new out-of-the-box and don't appear to have any visible scratches or even smudges, they are JVC DVD+R high speed (16x) 4.7GB disks. I just purchased a larger capacity hard drive and so I'm trying to create a System Image so I can transfer my OS, all the system files, settings, programs and personal files/data quickly and easily however 6 or 7 minutes after inserting the initial (#1) blank DVD+R disk the backup process stops and I get an error message that reads "Windows Backup found errors on the media while saving a backup on it and cannot use it for additional backups" and instructs me to insert another blank disk. My XPS has its original Dell DVD drive (an 8X DVD+/-RW). I have an XPS M1710 laptop that was born w/XP, upgraded to Vista and is now running Windows 7 Ultimate.
I'm stuck and not sure if it's the blank DVD+R disks or the DVD drive that's causing the problem.
